Part fantasy and part science fiction, "Charlie X" explores the question "why can’t
people treat each other with dignity?" The lead character of the book "Charlie Parker" is very short for his
age. Because of his size, he is bullied and picked on by everyone including his parents. As an adult, the bullying continues
until a rock from outer space transforms the small man into a giant. Charlie grows to an enormous size, beyond the point to
which his loving wife and children are able to care for him. This captivating story takes place in an airy Las Vegas
setting. Charlie’s life is cruel and unfair. People made fun of him and embarrassed him because he was different. Charlie
was a great man and loved by his wife and kids and all he ever wanted was for others to treat him with dignity and respect.
The story is unforgettable and there is a lot to be learned from the complex characters intended for teens of all ages. Book Excerpt:
Did you hear about this from the newspaper or from
some radio or television’s new flash, -Charlie Albert Parker age of 27 died October 8, 2049? The world cried that day.
There was even a moment of silence observed in Vegas that night. A statute depicting Charles’ holding me stands in front
of the Royal Crown Casino all in bronze. It has been three years now David and Sally hardly ever talk about Charlie anymore,
their Dad. Why is life so cruel, so unfair? Why do some people like to make fun of or try to embarrass someone just because
they are different? Charlie was such a wonderful husband, a friend…SNIFF! Sorry about that but I really did love him.
Charlie and I were destined for each other right from the start. On October 8, no one laughed at Charlie, or gawked at him
anymore. I finally agreed to Doctor Professor Bonn’s request to do some further studies of Charles’ body. Professor
Bonn promised me that they would use care and dignity when he did his studies. That is what Charles wanted more than anything
else, to have others treat him with dignity.
